''Hi. My name’s Jim Whelan, a.k.a Hit By A Rock or even HBAR, and I’m an electronic music producer and musician from London.
Labels such as Huahua, Other Sounds (Cherry Red), Redvolume, Wall Of Sound, Studio K7!, Guerilla (William Orbit), Temple (Genesis P-Orridge), Cold Spring, and Gradient Audio have released my music. I’ve also remixed artists as diverse as Schoolly-D, Coil, Susheela Raman, Mekon, Lydia Lunch, Faib and Future Funk Squad.
My music is created using an individual, experimental workflow, and to me, occupies a no man’s land between dark and dubby Bass music, deeply-modulated slow Techno, and industrial noise. I like the sometimes happy mis-marriage between obviously melodic voice samples, and the ghost harmonics unearthed from unfiltered audio artifacts of natural and stolen recordings.
When not stuck between the speakers, I play guitar and bass for 23 Skidoo, the influential post-punk band, and bass/keyboards for Psapp, the cat-tronica band best-known for providing the theme to “Greys Anatomy” on the telly. On the odd occasion, I can also be seen playing live electronics and bass for Kleppmusik, the guitar-fuelled wonky-Krautrock GarageBand.
I also do sound design, composition and audio-montage for a few fashion houses, most notably Alexander McQueen. This includes show-music, but also projects like the massive Savage Beauty exhibition at London’s V&A museum, where I worked on composition and sound design.''
